Blog stalk #1: Johanna Ost

I have thought-up an idea. I will publicise my stalking. Victim number 1 is the lovely Johanne Ost, whose blog is one of my favorites. You can find her here: http://blog.johannaost.com/

She is a charming artist and vintage fashion blogger. I thought I would share her with you, if you don't yet know who she is. Enjoy these few photos which I have hand-picked just for you!

And now a sample for her art:

Casual outfit post

Howdy everyone
Today, I am going to show you something rare. Like a white tiger. Yes, that rare.
It is me in a casual outfit. Casual even by other people's definition. And with dirty hair. Allow me to set the scene. I was visiting my parents. I had made plans late at night to meet a good friend for coffee before she went to work the next day. But I got up with only about 20 minutes to get ready and drive there. And I felt too tired to bother. But I still thought of you, dear readers, and took some photos before I left. Enjoy as it may be your last glimpse at Casual Kate...

My hair is done with just a simple bun and a hairclip that looks like a bow made from my hair, but it's not.
Kissies,

Cake Decorating

Some cak-ettes I made

Cake decorating is fun, and delicious (if you can bring yourself to eat the finished product! Once I bought a pretty frangipany muffin and had it in my fridge in a transparent case - museum style - for nearly a year. I just couldn't bring myself to destroy it's perfection. In the end I had to throw it out)

To  make cakes like these, you will need:

1. Your favorite cake (I just made a really basic sponge)
2. Some Royal Icing (from the supermarket)
3. Some marzipan (to make the roses)
4. cutter, to cut the cake into whatever shape you want
5. Various things to decorate. I used mulberries (cake 1), I made some marzipan roses (all cakes but 3), ribbon (cake 3), glittery butterfly (cake 2), strawberries (cake 3), turkish delight (cake 3), marzipan coloured pink with food colouring and rolled into little balls (cake 3)

Note: when rolling out the icing, you need to make sure the surface you roll on is perfectly clean, otherwise your icing will be tainted. You can colour the icing with food colouring if you want.

Note 2: You can make all kinds of things to top your cake with out of marzipan or Royal icing. Experiment! You could make little people, palm trees, strawberries, a watermelon, a pokeball, whatever!

Some more inspiration (not made by me!)

Kate in the Kitchen

I made something in the kitchen, dear friends. Llewyn (my boyfriend) documented this particular endeavour for your entertainment. So here will be your first recipe post, with pictures of me being a dork in the kitchen of my parent's house...just thought I would let you know so you aren't shocked by the size of the kitchen..I personally live in a small apartment with a kitchen only big enough for one. But still I love my apartment.

First, a note about my diet. I have (unfortunately) got a chonric disease (not contagious!) which means that I try my best to maintain my health. Thus I eat very healthily. I also have the world's largest sweet-tooth. At first, I thought it would be nigh on impossibile for me to have lots of desserts while eating super-healthily, but I was wrong!! When I can, I primarily eat a raw diet. About 80% raw. Not just salads, but all manner of interesting things. And so many desserts. Raw desserts are often richer than thier cooked counterparts, so normal people need less to feel satisfied. I however would be happy to eat an entire raw chocolate judge cake and would still want more sweets. So today I present you with a sweet recipe. Enjoy!!

(Recipe from one of my favorite food blogs, Raw on 10, which is great if you are trying to eat raw on a tight budget, like me)

Bye Bye

An Outing

Hello there!

Yesterday I went on an outing. My parents and younger brother had come to visit me, and we decided to go and see a fabulous exhibition that is on loan from the British Museum. It is a mummy exhibition called 'Secrets of the Tomb'. You have to book in advance, as there is a 3D film at the beginning with limited seats. Then there is an exhibition, with several mummies and lots of ancient Egyptian artifacts. I loved it, I've now been twice and plan to go again. If you live in the Brisbane area, or even just within driving distance, I think it is really worth going to (but then again, perhaps I enjoyed it more than most because I am doing a degree in anthropology and archaeology).

This is the outfit I wore:

Dress: custom made, Hat: Found in a pool, Shoes: From an Op Shop, Bag: Actually a Jewellery box (unsure what brand)

After the mummy exhibition, I got rather excited at the prospect of the Science Centre part of the museum, and spent a long time in there. This is me enjoying science!

And a close-up of my makeup:

oh no! My hat is falling off!

Flight of the Conchords

I love The Flight of the Conchords. They are one of my favey comedic groups. They are great. And I got to go see them live. They are currently touring Australia, and me being a lucky duck and having a fantastic boyfriend who bought me a ticket, got to go to thier performance at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Arj Barker was their supporting act, and he was very funny. At the end of the show my face hurt from laughing so much. For those who love them, you may be interested to know that they performed some new songs they haven't yet recorded, so keep your peepers peeled!

If you don't know who they are, check them out!

And now for your enjoyment, my outfit from the night. (Sorry the pictures are so dodgy, but I don't have a good camera, only a phone)

Jacket: Dangerfield Revival   Shoes: TUK     Dress: can't remember   Hat: Ebay    Belt: Pinup Couture

tata for now! xx

Blog Up and Running!

Soooo, after staying up until 3:00am in the morning, working tirelessly, I have (almost) finished setting up my blog! I hope you will enjoy all that is to come. This blog will be about kooky pinup and vintage fashion, a tad of DIY, delighful edible treats, pretty pictures and my loves and interests.

First, a little about myself, so you and I can become friends. (I'd love to hear about you, too, so that we can ACTUALLY be friends...). I am a university student in Australia. I am currently doing two degrees...on in anthropology and archaeology, and the other in science. I read and write, and paint and draw, and make things too. I make a little money from doing commissioned portraits (check out my art website katephillipsart@wordpress.com). I enjoy cooking, too. My style has been a bit odd ever since I  was 13. Nowadays, it's a large splash of pinup/rockabilly, mixed with a tad of cute kooky kitsch, a dash of more traditional vintage and a little sprinkling of some kind of cute gothic-ness. I hope you like it, but if you don't then you don't need to look at this blog :)

Tell your friends, shout from the rooftops, or just keep me for yourself... let's get started! yay!

xxx Kate
